After finishing 10th at round one in Tasmania Nathan Weissel is proving to be a potential front runner by finishing round two at Queensland Raceway in an impressive overall 6th position.
This great result moves Nathan into sixth outright (moving him up 4 spots from round one) in the Drift Australia Series point standings.
After qualifying 3rd Nathan had a bye run in the Top 32, which lead to his first battle in the Top 16 against Catherine Coleiro where he managed to comfortably take the win. The next battle saw Nathan up against Dan Kennelly in the Top 8 shootout, when unfortunately the car suffered from an unforseen handbrake malfunction. In the opening run the handbrake locked up causing Weissel’s Federal Tyres Skyline to spin out, and although he drove strongly to win the second battle it was his spin in the first run that handed a points based win to Kennelly.
“During the Top 16 battle I had a bit of a drama with the handbrake, as it locked on, but I still did enough to take the win,” Weissel explained.
“Even though I had a spin in the top 8 battle with Dan I am fairly happy with the result. The extra grip provided by the Federal 595RS tyres really helped me to build up speed and hold it throughout my slides and the power and response from the new turbo set up GCG Turbos supplied has really improved the cars overall competitiveness.”
Nathan explained that he feels his Federal Tyres R32 Skyline is now up to his high standards and has the potential to take him to a podium finish at the next round in South Australia.
The third round of the Drift Australia Series is to be held on May 24 – 25 at Mallala Motorsport Park in South Australia.
